Chef heats up airwaves

Alfredo DeBonis has come up with just the right recipe for North Brunswick’s cable access television station. The world-traveled chef and culinary teacher is set to debut “A Taste of Italy in North Brunswick,” a six-part cooking show, next month on Channel 22. Although the times and dates of the shows have not yet been announced, the first taping was cut this weekend in DeBonis’ basement.

In many towns, public access television is synonymous with electronic bulletin boards accompanied by elevator music, Southern televangelists who buy airtime on the cheap, and throwaway programming that makes you scratch your head and say, “What the heck is this?” In other words, they’re stations most people won’t stop by unless they press the wrong number combination on their clickers.

But DeBonis’ show is different. For once, a resident is taking advantage of this seldom-tapped public resource to share something fun and creative with his community. North Brunswick is home to many unique people with many unique talents, and we’d love to see more of them follow DeBonis’ lead. Mix in a few shows like that with the township’s growing list of municipal programs, like live meeting tapings, and Channel 22 could be something special.

We wish DeBonis buona fortuna on his new show and future endeavors.
